D. J. Seeley scored 25 points and fellow transfers Kwame Vaughn and Omondi Amoke added 21 and 20 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough Sunday afternoon as Cal State Fullerton dropped an 88-83 decision to Houston Baptist in the Beryl Shipley Classic in the Cajundome.
Fullerton, now 3-1, finished 2-1 in the tourney and wins the title by tie-breaker over either 1-1 Lousiana or Nicholls State, who play at 3:30 p.m. CST in the final game. Houston Baptist went 1-2 in the tourney and is 2-3 overall.
Tyler Russell scored 20 points to lead the Huskies, who also got 17 points from Marcel Smith and Ronald March.
Fullerton fell behind 14-0 to start the game as HBU hit its first four 3-point tries on the way to a 10-for-19 effort. The Titans' only lead of the game was at 23-21 at 6:45 of the first half, which ended with HBU on top, 43-40. The deficit grew as large as 8 points in the second half at 54-46 at 16:31.
"We ran out of gas after lasat night's game," said Fullerton Coach Bob Burton. "We had no energy. But we will take from this game the things we need to work on."
Fullerton tied it once at 60-60 with 9:35 to go on a dunk by Amoke and they had a couple of chances to tie in the final minute. Both Seeley and Vaughn missed trey attempts on the same possession with about 20 seconds left. Isiah Umipig was called for an illegal screen with Fullerton trailing by 3 with 3 seconds left.
The Titans made only 2 of 15 attempts from the 3-point line. They won the rebounding battle, 47-28, thanks to 20 offensive rebounds.
Seeley was voted the MVP of the tournament and was joined on the 10-man all-tourney squad by teammates Orane Chin and Vaughn.
