Titans Win First Opener in Nine Years
Nov. 20, 2005
Fullerton, Calif. - Sophomore guard Frank Robinson came off the bench to score 20 points in his Cal State Fullerton debut as the Titans rolled to a 97-52 victory over Hope International in their 2005-06 season opener in Titan Gym.
Hope, an NAIA school with an 0-3 record, treats the game with an NCAA foe as an exhibition but it's an official game for Fullerton. The last time the Titans won a season opener was Nov. 22, 1996, with a 75-67 decision at BYU.
Junior center Gary Nunez, a transfer from Ventura College, scored 16 points and had 6 rebounds in his debut, also off the bench. Senior forward Jamaal Brown led the starters with 15 points and junior guard Bobby Brown had 13, all in the first half.
Aron Cline led the Royals with 12 points and Enrique Villarreal had 11.
The margin of victory was Fullerton's largest since a 106-60 home win over Brown on Dec. 30, 1987. Fullerton had a huge 61-26 edge on the backboards.
Fullerton scored the game's first nine points and led by double figures from 16-5 at 11:33 of the first half. The halftime score was 53-25 and the dibbesgt lead was 54 points at 91-37 with 6:56 remaining.
Fullerton hosts Pepperdine, a loser at home to Connecticut in its season opener, on Wednesday night. Hope hosts Westmont on Nov. 29.
