Fullerton, Calif. - Dedrick Bates and Klaus Schille posted career-high 23-point games and Larry Cunningham made six clutch free throws in six tries Saturday afternoon to lead UC Riverside to a 78-73 overtime Big West Conference victory at Cal State Fullerton. The win snapped UCR's 5-game losing streak and left its record at 3-16 overall and 3-5 in the Big West.
Schille scored the Highlanders first six points of overtime and his free throw at 2:08 put them ahead to stay at 72-71. Cunningham, who convered a bonus situation late in regulation to help UCR forge a tie, made 4 out of 4 in the final 26 seconds for UCR's final 4 points.
Bobby Brown, CSF's career 3-point field goal record holder, missed all 8 tries from behind the arc including one just before the regulation buzzer. He had another rattle in and out with 14 seconds left in overtime that would have tied the game.
Bates scored 19 of his points in the first half, which saw 6 lead changes and neither team lead by more than 6 points. Fullerton extended its 41-38 halftime lead to as many as 8 in the second half, the last time at 52-44 with 13:18 remaining. UCR caught up at 62-62 but CSF got buckets from each Brown to lead 66-62 with 3:37 left.
Neither team could find the range from the 3-point line with UCR making 1 of 9 and Fullerton only 2 of 20.
