Fullerton, Calif. - Junior forward Scott Cutley scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds Thursday night as Cal State Fullerton hung on for an 84-77 non-conference victory over UC Davis.
Thomas Juillerat scored 22 points, Vince Oliver had 13 and Bussey Ellis added 11 for the Aggies, who fell to 4-14.
Cutley made 14 of 16 shots from the floor but only 5 of 11 from the foul line as he and Juillerat battled head-to-head at both ends of the floor. Juillerat made 11 of 18 field goals and grabbed 6 rebounds. It was the fourth consecutive double-double for Cutley, who leads the Big West Conference with eight. Cutley's previous high game was 31 points at Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 24.
Fullerton shot 57 percent from the floor including 64 percent in a first half that saw it lead only 40-35 when Ellis knocked in a 3-pointer the buzzer. The Titans finished with 10 3-point field goals in 16 attempts.
The Titans made only 12 of 22 free throws and never could put the Aggies away despite leading for the final 30 minutes. Their biggest lead was 74-57 with 5:53 to play but UC Davis went on an 11-2 run to pull within 76-68 with 3:40 to play. Davis got no closer than the final margin.
Brown dished out 7 assists to pad his Big West lead. Crenshaw came off the bench to hit 4 of 6 3-pointers as he netted his 16 points in only 26 minutes of play.
With the victory, Bob Burton became the winningest coach in Fullerton history. His 4th-year mark of 63-45 is a .5833 percentage. Bobby Dye had a .5829 mark at 109-78.
Fullerton returns to Big West play Saturday at 6:05 p.m. when it hosts UC Irvine in a rematch of its 71-68 win at Irvine last Saturday. Davis plays at UC Riverside on Saturday.
