Titans Pull Away from SLO

Fullerton, Calif. - Senior forward Gerard Anderson scored 20 points including a career-high 12 free throws and junior Jer'Vaughn Johnson had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 68-54 Big West Conference victory over Cal Poly.
Juniors Bryce Webster and Devon Peltier also scored 11 points each for the Titans (8-7, 3-1), who won their third game in a row to move into first place. Cal Poly's Lorenzo Keeler, who averaged 26 points in three games last week, led the Mustangs (5-10, 2-2) with 13 points but made only 2 of 11 shots against the defense of Fullerton's Aaron Thompson.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 13-4 lead, but after making 4 of its first 5 shots, made only 11 of 40 the rest of the way to finish at 33 percent. Fullerton didn't fare much better at 37 percent but made 30 of 37 free throws. The last time Fullerton made 30 free throws in a game was Feb. 13, 1999, (38 of 46) in a 104-97 win over UC Irvine.
Cal Poly had 32 free throw attempts but made only 19. Its 54 points were the low by a Fullerton opponent this season.
Fullerton committed a season low of 8 turnovers, only one in the second half, to 13 for the Mustangs, who were outrebounded, 36-32.
Junior Devon Peltier scored a 3-pointer to tie the game, 18-18, with 6:00 left to play in the first half. Seconds later Anderson gave the Titans their first lead of the game, making two free throws. Peltier ended the first half with his second 3-pointer of the night for a 27-25 lead.
Cal Poly tied the game early in the second half, the last time at 28 all. Johnson took the lead back for Fullerton with a basket to start a 6-1 run for a 34-29 lead it never surrendered. The Titans stretched the lead to as many as 14 points at 53-39 at 7:40 after a breakaway dunk by Anderson. Cal Poly got as close as 5 points, the last time at 57-52 at 2:07, but Webster scored inside and then Fullerton made 9 of 10 free throws to finish the game.
The Titans next take on Cal State Northridge on Saturday at home at 6:05. Cal Poly plays at Long Beach at 4:05 p.m.
