Irvine, Calif. - Patrick Rembert scored 20 points and Mike Wilder added 17 Wednesday night as UCI pulled away to an 85-78 victory over Cal State Fullerton.
Devon Peltier led the Titans with 23 points -- 19 in the first half -- and freshman Isiah Umipig had a season-high 19 -- 16 in the second half -- for the Titans, now 5-10, 1-2. UCI ended a 4-game losing streak and improved to 7-8, 1-1.
The game was tied at 49 at 15:46 when UCI went on a 10-1 "run" over an extended period for a 59-50 lead as late as 9:37 and the Titans never recovered.
"Obviously, it's hard to win when you commit 24 turnovers," said CSF Head Coach Bob Burton. "If you hold (Eric) Wise to 6 points and (Darren) Moore to 10, you would think you have a pretty good chance to win. But we've had that problem all year -- stopping the top guys but letting other people beat us.
"Not having Andre Hardy (one-game suspension) also had an effect. We were just getting used to playing with him."
Fullerton, which committed only 3 turnovers in last week's win over Pacific, committed five on its first five possessions and finished with a season high 24 vs. only 6 assists. UCI missed 14 free throws which kept Fullerton in contention until Wilder hit a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock for a 77-70 lead with 57 seconds remaining.
Fullerton plays again on Saturday night at 7:30 at UC Riverside in a game to be televised on PrimeTicket.
