City Council Honors Fullerton Basketball Coaches
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton head coaches Dedrique Taylor and Daron Park were honored with letters of commendation by Fullerton Mayor Bruce Whitaker and the Fullerton City Council on Tuesday night.
"I would like to say, first, 'thank you' to the Mayor and the rest of the City Council members for taking the time to recognize myself but, most important, our program," Taylor said. "We are part of the city here and extremely proud to be a part of it and anxious to represent the city in a fashion that I think you guys will be pleased with, excited about, and anxious to see," Taylor said.
"We've got some fine young men which, at the end of the day, is what this opportunity is about, is to be able to build young men that can become productive citizens of Fullerton and, hopefully, sit on the council one day and represent themselves and their community."
"I am honored and humbled to be here," Park said. "These are things you dream about, to have the opportunity to stand before you to be recognized before you've even had the chance to play a game is that way it should be done.
"Since coming here and taking the reins at Cal State Fullerton, it's been an amazing experience to understand that there actually are small town communities in a major metropolitan area. Everyone gets so caught up in Los Angeles and Southern California. It can be so big and so overwhelming that it's refreshing to be able to be able to drive down 'Main Street," and visit local establishments, and be part of a community like Fullerton.
"It is absolutely our pleasure, our purpose, and our expectation that we will represent, not only Cal State Fullerton, everytime we step on the court, but also the Fullerton community. We will make you extremely proud, we will make you extremely excited, and i cannot wait to show you what we have in store."
The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team opens its season with an exhibition on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. against Cal Baptist while the men's basketball team tips off on Nov. 2 with an exhibition against Redlands at 6 p.m.
