FULLERTON, Calif. -- Joe Boyd, a forward out of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to continue his academic and athletic career at Cal State Fullerton, head men's basketball coach Dedrique Taylor announced Wednesday.
"Joe Boyd is a huge piece to our puzzle both literally and figuratively," Taylor said. "He fills a need that we have with his character as well as his size and skill set. We are excited to have Joe join ranks with us and help build the foundation that leads us to the top of the Big West Conference."
Boyd joins recent recruit Sheldon Blackwell (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) as members of the first recruiting class for Taylor in his first season with the Titans.
One of the top-rated prospects in the state, the 6-foot-9, 225-pound post player originally signed with Drake in November, but requested his release after a coaching change. A versatile three-star recruit according to Scout.com, he missed his junior season due to injury, but averaged 10.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a senior in 2012-13 for the Firebirds, helping his team to a 22-8 overall record and a 10-4 mark in conference play.
He also averaged 8.9 points and 4.6 rebounds as a sophomore starter for Chaparral High School, helping the Firebirds to a 20-10 overall record and a runner-up finish for the Arizona 5A Division II state title.
