Titan Baseball Inks 11 for `09

Nov. 20, 2007

Fullerton, Calif. - Titans' head baseball coach Dave Serrano announced that 11 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period and have plans to attend Cal State Fullerton and play baseball during the 2008-09 academic year.

"We feel this is a very strong recruiting class not just in terms of statistical numbers, but in terms of quality young men." first-year Head Coach Dave Serrano said. "The coaching staff has done a fabulous job of bringing in the right kind of young men, with the right kind of ability."

This marks the first recruiting class for the Titans' new coaching staff assembled by assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Sergio Brown and assistant coach Greg Bergeron. The new Titan staff's 2007 recruiting class for UC Irvine was ranked 14th in the nation by Baseball America, and culminated in the school's first trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The 2008-09 group is headlined by a pair of 2008 Baseball America Top 100 Prospects in Jarrett Martin and Michael Montgomery and features nine high schoolers and two junior college transfers.

"The focus of this recruiting class was pitching and middle of the order hitters," Brown said.

"We landed the 2 best left handed pitchers in the state in Jarrett Martin and Michael Montgomery and we were also able to secure two of the best right-handers in Tyler Pill and Noe Ramirez. All four of those guys will be ready to contribute as freshmen and all have the stuff to be Friday night guys for anybody in the country."

The help on the mound comes at a perfect time as proven seniors Jeff Kaplan, the only returning full-time starter form 2007, and Adam Jorgenson, a possible starter in 2008, will be playing their final seasons in pinstripes this season.

"The special thing about this class is that they all wanted to be Titans. They all want to wear the pinstripes," Brown said.

"Right-hander Kyle Witten from Bakersfield College has been drafted twice and will have the chance to give us innings immediately and make an impact as well.

"Offensively the likes of Carlos Lopez and Nick Ramirez will give us instant power in the middle of the order. Carlos is a pure hitter and Nick is just as dangerous and also will help out on the mound.

Brown rounded out the class by saying, "Cody Collins will be a very offensive catcher in the Big West Conference... John Hay will bring a lot of experience to this team, as he is one of the best JC hitters in the state ... And Justin Koehler and Austin Kingsolver are the types of baseball players that epitomize Cal State Fullerton baseball."
