Four Baseball America Top Prospects Highlight Early Period Signings

Fullerton, Calif. - Second-year head baseball coach Dave Serrano announced Wednesday that 13 high school seniors have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Cal State Fullerton for the 2009-10 academic year.

All 13 athletes reside in California and will be competing in their senior seasons at their respective high schools in the spring of 2009.

"I am ecstatic at the overall quality of the players Sergio Brown (recruiting coordinator), Greg Bergeron (assistant coach), and the rest of the staff have been able to assemble for the 2010 class during this early signing period," Serrano said.

"The challenge ahead of us now is to see how many of them will be able to stick to their educational commitment as many of them may have the opportunity to play professionally out of high school. Our fingers are crossed."

Serrano speaks of players such as Tyler Skaggs (No. 8 / Santa Monica H.S), Matt Hobgood (No. 22 / Norco H.S.), Geno Escalante (No. 31 / Rodriguez H.S.) and Dylan Floro (No. 56 / Buhach Colony H.S.) who have been ranked by Baseball America as one of the publication's Top 100 Prospects in the nation as well as Wes Hatton (Norco H.S.), who spent a portion of his summer in the ranks of USA Baseball.

"We are extremely excited about the potential of this group. We feel we have secured some very high-end pitchers and position players that will be a great match for us, ensuring our continued success for many years to come." said Serrano.

Rounding out the rest of the inked prep stars in alphabetical order are: Andrew Bellatti (Steele Canyon H.S), Anthony Hutting (Tesoro H.S.), David Kiriakos (Pacific, H.S.), Steven Mancilla (Sonora H.S), Frankie Martin, Jr. (Yucaipa H.S.), Jonathan Meyer (Simi Valley H.S.), Richy Pedroza (Northview H.S.) and Ivory Thomas (Downey H.S.).

Andrew Bellatti (RHP/1B, 6-1, 175, La Mesa, Calif., Steele Canyon HS)
• Was 7-4 with a 2.15 ERA in 2008, striking out 97 in 74 innings pitched
• Was a 2008 All-Grossmont Soiuth League first teamer
• Was a 2008 first-team All-East County selection
• Was a 2008 first-team All-CIF San Diego Section Div. II selection

Geno Escalante (C, 5-10, 185, Fairfield, Calif., Rodriguez HS)
• No. 31 on the Baseball America Top Prospect list
• Hit .308 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI in 2008
• Is a two-time All-Solano County League Honorable Mention recipient (2006, 2008)
• Hit .411 with 2 homers and 29 RBI as a sophomore earning the Solano County League Most Valuable Player honor in 2007.

Dylan Floro (RHP/OF, 6-3, 175, Merced Calif., Buhach Colony HS)
• No. 56 on the Baseball America Top 100 Prospect list
• Was 12-1 with a 0.75 ERA with seven complete games in 2008.
• 2008 Baseball America second-team All-American
• Two-time Central California League Pitcher of the year (2007, 2008) Merced Sun Star and Modesto Bee first-team all-area as a pitcher
• Current Titan Brock Floro's younger brother

Matt Hobgood (RHP/1B, 6-4, 245, Norco, Calif., Norco HS)
• No. 22 on the Baseball America Top 100 Prospect list
• Hit .489 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI in 2008
• Was 10-0 with a 1.34 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 73.1 innings in 2008
• 2008 Mountain View League Most Valuable Player
• 2008 CIF Southern Section First Team
• Three-time 2008 All-American (EA Sports, CalHi Sports, MaxPreps.com)
• Two-time Riverside Press Enterprise first-team all-county team

Wes Hatton (SS/RHP, 5-11, 170, Norco, Calif., Norco HS)
• Team USA 18U: Struck out 8 in 5 innings over two appearances
• Hit .360 with a home run and 13 RBI in 2008
• Was 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 2008
• Two-time All-Mountain View League honoree (2007, 2008)
• An All-CIF Southern Section honoree in 2008
• An All-County and All-State Selection in 2008

Anthony Hutting (OF, 6-0, 180, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Tesoro HS)
• Hit .370 with 3 home runs and 18 RBI in 2008
• Is a two-time All-South Coast League honoree (2007, 2008)
• Was named to the all-county second team by the Orange County Register

David Kiriakos (INF, 5-11, 160, San Bernardino, Calif., Pacific HS)
• Hit .551 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 2008
• Multiple All-San Andreas League selections
• Named tot eh 2008 All-San Bernardino County Team

Steven Mancilla (INF, 6-1, 175, Whittier, Calif., Sonora HS)
• Hit .413 with three home runs and 30 RBI in 2008
• Was named the Freeway League's Most Valuable Player in 2008
• Was named to the all-county second team by the Orange County Register
• Was a first-team All-Freeway League infielder in 2007

Frankie Martin, Jr. (LHP/OF, 6-1, 170, Yucaipa, Calif., Yucaipa HS)
• Was 7-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 2008
• Struck out 45 in 38.1 innings in 2008
• Was named team Outstanding Pitcher of the Year in 2007
• Was named team Most Improved Player in 2008

Jonathan Meyer (SS/RHP, 6-0, 200, Simi Valley Calif., Simi Valley HS)
• Hit .667 (2-for-3) with 2RBI in 3 games for the silver medal winning Team USA 18U squad in 2008
• Member of the 2008 CIF champion Simi Valley HS team
• Hit .387 with 9 home runs and 46 RBI in 2008
• Was the Ventura County Star and the Daily News Player of the Year in 2008
• Was the 2008 LA Times All-County Team

Richy Pedroza (INF, 5-6, 130, Covina, Calif., Northview HS)
• Hit .416 for the 2008 CIF Champs
• Was a first-team All-Valle Vista selection in 2008
• Was named to the All-Valley Second Team
• Is the younger brother of former Titan standout Sergio Pedroza

Tyler Skaggs (LHP/1B, 6-4, 180, Los Angeles, Santa Monica HS)
• No. 8 on the Baseball America Top 100 Prospect list
• 2008 Baseball America second-team High School All-American
• Posted a 1.09 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 2008
• Was named the 2008 Ocean League MVP
• First-team All-CIF Southern Section selection in 2008
• Was a second-team All-State selection
• Was also an All-Ocean League selection in 2007

Ivory Thomas (OF/INF, 5-9, 175, Lynwood, Calif., Downey HS)
• Hit .429 with 3 home runs and 28 RBI in 2008
• Was named the San Gabriel Valley League's Co-Most Valuable Player in 2008
• Two-time All-San Gabriel Valley League first teamer
• Was the winning run of the longest (20-inning) CIF Southern Section game in history. He also had five hits in the game.
