Barr's Four Hits Lifts Virginia Over Rider, 8-2
May 31, 2008 FULLERTON, CA - Andrew Carraway and Michael Schwimer combined on a 6-hitter Saturday as Virginia eliminated Rider (29-28), 8-2, from the NCAA Baseball Regional at Cal State Fullerton. Virginia (39-22) survives to play Sunday against the loser of Saturday night's UCLA-Fullerton game. John Barr had 4 hits for the Cavaliers, who scored four unearned runs in the eighth on three Rider errors. The Cavaliers bunched two singles with doubles by Barr and David Coleman for three runs in the fourth. Carraway struck out 10 in his 7 innings and Schwimer finished for his 14th save. Rider scored its only runs of the tournament in the seventh. Steve Galella and Sean Olson singled. Galella scored on Mason Heyne's double into the left-field corner and Olson came home on a fly ball by Mo Williams. Carraway faced only one man over the minimum through six innings. Matt McCollum and James Hayes singled with two outs in the third but McCollum was thrown out trying to advance to third on a pitch in the dirt. Galella walked in the fourth but was erased on a double play. |
