Indianapolis, IN - Cal State Fullerton (42-14) was awarded the No. 2 national seed and will host Utah (26-29), Gonzaga (35-16) and Georgia Southern (42-15) in the 2009 Fullerton Regional as announced by the NCAA selection committee Monday morning on ESPN.
"We are very happy for our players that the NCAA Selection Committee has recognized us as a national seed based on our body of work through our first 56 games," said second-year Titan Head Coach Dave Serrano.
"We are also very pleased that our Regional has teams coming in from around the country that we are unfamiliar with and that have not been on our schedule in recent history."
Fullerton has faced Gonzaga 10 times at the Div. I level (going 7-3), but have not faced them since 1995. The Titans beat Utah in their only Div. I meeting in 1976. Fullerton and Georgia Southern may meet for the first time this weekend.
"Now our challenge as a team will be to continue to play out game with a consistent effort in this next phase of the season," said Serrano.
The Titans are winners in 23 of their last 27, and finished their regular season with a win over Pepperdine and a sweep of conference rival Long Beach State.
Cal State Fullerton is making their 18th straight postseason appearance and 31st overall and will play No. 4 seed Utah Friday night at 7 p.m. No. 2 Georgia Southern will square off with No. 3 Gonzaga Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Fullerton Regional pairs with the Louisville Regional that features Louisville (1), Middle Tennessee (2), Vanderbilt (3), and Indiana (4).
ESPN will be regionally broadcasting the Tallahassee and Irvine Regionals.
The Titans join Texas (1), LSU (3), North Carolina (4), Arizona State (5), UC Irvine (6), Oklahoma (7) and Florida (8) as national seeds, guaranteeing that they will not face each other until the College World Series.
