Fullerton, Calif. - A decent crowd of between 750 to 1000 fans were on hand at Goodwin Field Saturday afternoon to watch the 2011 Cal State Fullerton baseball team beat the Titan Alumni squad, 5-1, behind two hits apiece from Anthony Hutting, Spencer Ofelt and Austin Kingsolver in just over two hours.
Junior right-hander Jake Floethe logged the win with an efficient five-inning, three-hit, three-strikeout performance. The right-hander allowed a run in the top of the fifth inning on a Justin Turner (2003-06) walk, a Chris Powell (1991-92) double and a run-scoring groundout by Blake Davis (2004-06) that tied the game at 1-1.
Tyler Pill earned the save by tossing four scoreless innings to close out the game. The junior righty did surrender three hits - Powell's second hit of the afternoon, and singles to Joel Weeks (2007-08) and former teammate Christian Colon (2008-10) - but struck out his big brother, Brett (2004-06) to end the eighth inning.
Justin Klipp (2006) worked the first four innings for the alumni, allowing a run on three Titan hits while fanning three. In the third, he got the first out of the inning courtesy of a highlight reel diving catch in center field by Gary Brown (2008-10), but then surrendered a triple over Brown's head to Austin Kingsolver and an RBI-double by Richy Pedroza to give the Titans and early 1-0 lead.
The varsity squad took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when after a two-out single by Spencer Ofelt and Matt Orloff was hit by a Kyle Mertins (2009-10) pitch, Anthony Hutting hit a soft liner that was misplayed by Colon at short, scoring Ofelt from second. Mertins was tagged with the loss in one inning of work.
The Alumni had six hits on the afternoon - two by Powell and one each by Brown, Colon, Weeks and Richy's older brother Sergio Pedroza (2003-05). The 2011 Titans pounded out 10 hits, four of which came in their four-run eighth inning off pitcher Chris Robinson (1988-91). Three straight singles by Ofelt, Orloff and Hutting upped the score to 3-1, and then Casey Watkins' two-run double capped the scoring, making it 5-1.
In all, more than 50 Titan baseball alumni were on hand for the annual event including five 2010 Major Leaguers (Ricky Romero - 2003-05, Kurt Suzuki - 2002-04, Chad Cordero - 2001-03, Justin Turner - 2003-06, and Vinnie Pestano - 2004-06), two 2010 first-round draft picks (Colon and Brown) and former big-league veteran, minor league manager and TItan Hall of Famer Phil Nevin (1990-92).
