Jan. 20, 2009

Irvine, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton baseball team was picked as the favorite to win this year's Big West Conference crown as the league office announce the results of the 2009 Preseason Coaches Poll Tuesday afternoon.

The Titans received seven first-place votes and 78 of 81 total points in the annual poll and placed ahead of UC Irvine which finished in second place with 67 total points. Santa Barbara (65 pts.) and Long Beach State (55 pts.) each received a first-place vote and finished in third and fourth place, respectively. Cal Poly, UC Riverside, UC Davis, Cal State Northridge and Pacific rounded out the results.

The 2008 Titans, guided by new skipper Dave Serrano, finished tied for first with Long Beach State with a 16-8 mark. With the Titans and 49ers each winning a piece of last year's conference crown, the two teams have now won all but 2.5 titles in the last 11 seasons. Cal State Northridge (2002), UC Riverside (2007) and Nevada (2000, shared with Fullerton) are the only other schools to have won the title since 1999.
