Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton baseball Head Coach Dave Serrano will join 12 other Southern Californian/Central Coast head coaches at the 2010 ESPN Zone Anaheim Cooking Challenge/Easton Southern California Baseball Coaches Media Day event to be held on Jan. 22 at the ESPN Zone at Downtown Disney in Anaheim. Media interviews will run from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the cook-off segment going from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Joining Serrano in the "Iron Chef" style competition will be will be defending cook-off champion Chad Kreuter (USC), Jason Gill (Loyola Marymount), Larry Lee (Cal Poly), John Savage (UCLA), Rich Hill (San Diego), Steve Rousey (Cal State Northridge), Steve Rodriguez (Pepperdine), Mike Gillespie (UC Irvine), Doug Smith (UC Riverside), Bob Brontsema (UC Santa Barbara), Tony Gwynn (San Diego State) and Bill Kernen (Cal State Bakersfield. Long Beach State Associate Head Coach Troy Buckley will participate in the media day portion of the event only.
The Southern California coaches will each confer with an ESPN Zone chef before being be set free to prepare an entrée in a 20-minute timeframe to be presented to a panel of judges. The dishes will be graded on presentation, creativity and taste.
This year the ESPN Zone Cooking Challenge will be paired with Easton's Southern California Media Day. During their "down" periods, coaches will be giving interviews to local media including on-camera interviews with Easton representative Eric Sorenson (of collegebaseballtoday.com fame) as well as live interviews with Roger Lodge of AM 830's "Sports Lodge," who will be broadcasting from the in-restaurant studio. The "Sports Lodge" program runs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Also in attendance will be the KTLA Morning News, which will provide live "look-ins" on the event at both 7:15 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.
The Southern California event is opening act of a two-day media event highlighting college baseball in California. The Northern California portion will take place on Jan. 26 at the Kissick Auditorium on the campus of Stanford University. The Northern Californian event will feature Stanford, Cal, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Saint Mary's, San Jose State, UC Davis, Pacific, Sacramento State and Fresno State.
Teams from around the Golden State have combined to win 29 titles and have participated in over 50 College World Series. Over 80 representatives form the Californian schools played in a Major League uniform this past season, and five former players have been enshrined in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown (Jackie Robinson (UCLA), Ozzie Smith (Cal Poly), Tony Gwynn (San Diego State), Harry Hopper (Saint Mary's) and Tom Seaver (USC).
