Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton has been ranked ninth in the country by RosenblattReport.com, a web site based out of Texas dedicated to college baseball on a national level. The pre-season rankings count down their top 35 teams in the country, to be narrowed to a Top 25 format once the season gets underway.
Fullerton, coming off of a 46-18 season in 2005, narrowly missed the College World Series in Omaha as they fell to Arizona State in the Super Regional at Goodwin Field.
The Longhorns of Texas return several key players from last year's national championship squad and will hold down the No. 1 spot on the poll, with 2006 Titan opponent Rice taking the No. 2 slot. The No. 9 Titans will also play ranked Pepperdine (13), Long Beach State (20), USC (24), and Stanford (30).
The Rosenblatt Report also named two Titans to their 2006 Pre-Season All-American teams. Right-handed closer Vinnie Pestano earned second-team recognition while shortstop Blake Davis was named a third-teamer.
A Big West Conference honorable mention, Pestano (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) was 3-4 last year with a 2.68 ERA out of the bull pen. He was most valuable to the Titans when he came into close, notching 13 saves and holding his opponents to a .239 batting average. Pestano struck out 49 hitters in 50.1 innings.
Davis (Fountain Valley, Calif.) was a catalyst at the top of the Titan lineup hitting .325 (third-best on the team) with 2 home runs and 36 RBI. Davis also sported a .348 on base percentage, stole a team-leading 17 bases and 8 triples. The shortstop earned first-team All-Big West Conference Honors and was named to the 2005 US national team.
