Fullerton, Calif. - Naomi Washington and Caitlin Ledoux combined for 25 kills as No. 25 Long Beach State defeated Cal State Fullerton, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21), to open Big West Conference play Saturday night in Titan Gym.
The Titans (9-5, 0-1) dropped their 54th consecutive match to the 49ers (8-3, 1-0), and put Head Coach Carolyn Zimmerman's 100th victory on hold for at least one more night.
Fullerton hung with the nationally-ranked 49ers for a good portion of the match, but midway of each set Long Beach would pull away. Erin Saddler was the only Titan in double figures in kills posting 13 for Fullerton. Long Beach's Washington led all players with 15.
The Titans held Long Beach to just a .220 attack percentage thanks to 24 digs by Cami Croteau and three blocks from Alex Wolnisty. The 49ers edged the Titans defensively, out-digging them 61-46 and out-blocking them 8.0 to 6.0. Setter Ashley Lee and defensive specialist Laura Schuck each collected 14 digs and Michelle Osunbor had a match-high six blocks as Long Beach held Fullerton to just a .115 attack percentage.
The Titans will return to the court on Oct. 2-3 when they will host Cal Poly and UC Sata Barbara in Big West action next weekend at Titan Gym.
