Fullerton, Calif. - Freshman Dylan Floro tossed a 4-hit shutout and Nick Ramirez homered and doubled to key a 14-hit attack Friday night as No. 8-ranked Cal State Fullerton blanked Cal State Northridge, 6-0.
The Titans' fifth win in a row lifted them to 39-15 overall and 19-3 in the Big West Conference. Northridge fell to 29-25 and 9-13.
Floro (7-0) won his fifth start in a row with his second shutout. He didn't allow a hit until one out in the sixth when Drew Muren punched a hard ground ball between second baseman Corey Jones and the bag. CSUN got its second hit when Dominic Piazza singled in the eighth, when the Matadors loaded the bases with two out only to have Ryan Pineda ground to second on the first pitch.
The Matadors got two hits in the ninth but a nifty 6-4-3 double play kept Floro's shutout intact. He walked two and struck out seven, throwing 109 pitches.
The Titans jumped on loser Billy Ott (2-2) in the first inning. With one out, Richie Pedroza got a bunt single when third baseman Justin DeMarco couldn't make a bare-handed pick up. With two out, Tyler Pill was hit by a 2-2 pitch and Ramirez then drove a 3-2 pitch over the netting behind the right-center field fence for his 11th home run of the year.
Pill scored again in the third. He singled, went to third on Ramirez' double off the center-field fence and scored as Billy Marcoe grounded to short. In the sixth, Joey Siddons beat out a one-out bunt, was sacrificed to second by Anthony Hutting and scored on Pedroza's two-out single to center.
In the seventh, Pill singled, stole second as Ramirez fanned and scored a third time on Jones' two-out single to center. Ott went all the way for the Matadors, throwing only 101 pitches.
The series continues Saturday at 6 p.m.
