Pitching, Defense Stumblle, Titans Fall, 12-8
April 26, 2011
San Diego, Calif. - Designated hitter Corey LeVier was 3-for-3 with four RBI and six other Toreros had two hits each as the University of San Diego (12-26) upset No. 10 Cal State Fullerton (28-12), 12-8, in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
Max McNabb (1-2), the Toreros' fourth of six pitchers on the afternoon, benefited from a five-run sixth that erased a 6-5 Fullerton lead. Ryan Ackland (0-1) suffered the loss as all three of the batters he faced singled and scored in the inning.
Paul Paez logged a save as he came in with the tying run on deck and retired three consecutive hitters.
Carlos Lopez went 4-for-5 with two triples for the Titans, who totaled 11 hits but gave up a season-high 17.
Scott Schauer singled to left to lead off the fifth inning off David Hurlbut and went to third when Tony Strazarra singled off Ackland. Kevin Muno and the Toreros caught a break when his routine groundball to short, a possible double-play ball, kangarooed over Keegan Dale's head for a single, scoring Schauer.
With runners at the corners, Ackland's pick-off throw to first went wild and down the line, scoring Strazarra and moving Muno to third. Replacement outfielder Kalei Hanawahine ended Ackland's afternoon, shooting the fourth straight single in the inning to right to make it 8-6 in favor of San Diego.
Fullerton went to its bullpen in Dylan Floro and he was greeted with a sharply hit ball by Kris Bryant to right that wound up going to the wall for a triple when Casey Watkins' effort failed on the sinking line drive. After a strikeout, Zack Kometani drove home the tenth run of the game with a sac-fly to right.
Fullerton gave starter Jake Floethe a 3-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy of an error by shortstop Julian Duran.
Ivory Thomas walked and stole second with one out. Tyler Pill walked and then Nick Ramirez looped a ball into short left that Duran couldn't handle for an error. The Titans' next hitter, Blake Barber, lifted a fly to right that should have been the third out of the inning, but instead scored Thomas from third. Lopez then lined a triple to right center off the glove of a diving Kevin Muno in center for two more runs.
Three singles and a walk produced two runs for San Diego in the bottom of the inning. Zack Kometani and Corey LeVier both had run-scoring singles up the middle to make it 3-2.
Schauer singled and scored in the second to even the game. He went to second on a grounder, to third on a Floethe wild pitch and then scored when the would-be third out grounder to second went through Greg Velazquez's legs for an error.
Levier's solo home run in the third off Christian Coronado gave USD a 4-3 lead. But a two-out single by Pill and a double by Nick Ramirez gave Fullerton a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth. USD tied it on Hanawahine's RBI single in the bottom half.
Fullerton took its last lead at 6-5 in the fifth when Lopez tripled off the wall in right and scored on a one-out single by Zach Tanida.
Fullerton, which has lost 3 of its last 4 games after a 6-game winning streak, returns to Big West Conference play this weekend with a 3-game series at home against Pacific.
