Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 15 Cal State Fullerton swept the two-game season series from USC with a 3-1 non-conference win Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field. Matt Wallach and Corey Jones each contributed two hits and an RBI to lead the Titans.
With the win Cal State Fullerton improves to 27-12 and extend their consecutive win streak to a season-high eight games. Southern California evens its record at 21-21 with the loss.
Matt Wallach's third home run of the season cleared the right field wall and gave the Titans a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. His home run was one of eight hits the Titans would get off starter Tommy Milone (2-5). Despite striking out seven over 6.2 innings of work, the Trojan southpaw was tagged with his fifth loss of the season.
Fullerton extended its lead with a pair of two-out runs in the third. Milone stuck out the first two Titans he faced, but then allowed four straight singles to give the TItans a 3-0 lead. Dustin Garneau had a successful squeeze bunt for an RBI and Corey Joney added an RBI single.
Adam Jorgenson (3-0) in his second start of the year, tossed three innings in the predetermined "staff" day, surrendering just two hits to pick up the win.
The first five Titan hurlers held the Trojans scoreless for eight innings before plating a run off Justin Klipp in the bottom of the ninth. Lucas Duda singled home Grant Green who was at second. Klipp hit J.J. Owen, the next batter, ending his night as Bryan Harris was called in from the pen.
Harris retired the three hitters he faced for his first save of the year.
The Titans return to Big West Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at UC Riverside. Game times are 7 p.m., 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., Friday through Sunday respectively.
