Davis, Calif. - Gary Brown had 4 hits to lead a 21-hit attack and Daniel Renken pitched 5.2 innings of no-hit ball on his way to his first victory in five weeks Friday afternoon as No. 10-ranked Cal State Fullerton cruised to a 13-1 Big West Conference victory at UC Davis.
The Titans won their fourth game in a row in supporting hard-luck Renken (5-2), who allowed 5 hits in 8 innings for his first win since March 19. Colin O'Connell pitched a scoreless ninth.
UC Davis fell to 7-29 and 1-9 with Dayne Quist (2-3) taking the loss. Fullerton is now 27-11 and 7-6.
All 11 Titans who came to the plate had at least one hit.
Christian Colon led off the game with his fourth home run of the year to left and the Titans rolled a 5-spot in the second inning. Dustin Garneau singled and went to third on Tony Harkey's double to left. Each runner moved up 90 feet as Joe Scott grounded to third and Harkey scored when Joey Siddons beat out a single to third. Siddons was thrown out at home trying to score on Colon's double to center but Colon came home on another double to center by Gary Brown. The latter scored on a Josh Fellhauer single and Fellhauer eventually came home on a balk.
Singles by Khris Davis and Garneau put Titans at the corners to open the third inning. Garneau stole second and each runner moved up a base when catcher Scott Kalush's throw went into center field for an error. Garneau scored as Harkey grounded to short to make it 8-0.
Renken faced only one man over the minimum through the first five innings. He didn't allow a baserunner until walking Daniel Cepin to lead off the fourth. Cepin stole second but was doubled up on a centerfield to second base double play. Ty Kelly walked but Renken got the third out and then pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
In the sixth, Renken walked two and gave up his first hit when Kelly beat out a grounder to short. But he preserved the shutout by striking out cleanup hitter Jared Thompson.
The shutout was lost the next inning as Davis got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Kyle Mihaylo and Grant Hirneise singled with one out. A wild pitch advanced the runners and Mihaylo scored as Kalush grounded out to short.
Quist came out after seven innings, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 13 hits. David Popkins relieved and was tagged for five runs over the next 1.2 innings. He was greeted in the eighth by singles by Jeff Newman and Joe Scott. After two outs, Brown tripled down the right-field line to score two runs and he came home on a passed ball.
In the ninth, the Titans loaded the bases on a walk to Newman, a pinch-hit single by Matt Fahey and Siddons' infield single. One run scored on a Colon sacrifice fly and a second on a bases-loaded walk to Fellhauer.
The Titans are a perfect 6-0 now at Dobbins Stadium, and 7-0 on the road against the Aggies. The two met at the Sacramento Rivercats' Raley Field in 2005.
The two teams will meet on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Game 2 of the Big West Conference series.
