Fullerton, Calif. - D. J. Crumlich, Sean Madigan and Christian Ramirez each had three hits and Madigan drove home four as UC Irvine beat No. 12 Cal State Fullerton 15-3 in Big West Conference action Friday night at Goodwin Field.
The loss snapped Fullerton's winning streak at nine games and dropped its record to 21-9 overall and 3-1 in league play. Irvine won its sixth in a row and improved to 20-6, 4-0.
Irvine starter Matt Summers held the Titans hitless for 4.1 innings before Jared Deacon's single to right put a digit in the hit column for Fullerton. At that point the Anteaters had already given the right-hander a 10-0 lead with a couple of back-to-back five run innings in the third and fourth. Summers (4-2) earned the win with the 7.1-inning, four-hit effort. He struck out eight and walked just two.
Fullerton's Jake Floethe (3-2) took the loss after getting chased after just 3.1 innings. Four of the eight runs he allowed were unearned. He struck out four and walked three.
In the top of the third, Tommy Reyes kicked things off by singling to third and then moved to third on a Crumlich double. Sean Madigan's ground ball brought home Reyes for what turned out to be the only earned run of the inning. Crumlich scored when substitute third baseman Blake Barber fielded Brian Hernandez' grounder and sailed his throw down the right-field line. After a ground ball out, Ronnie Sheaffer walked and Christian Ramirez tripled to right for two more runs. Ramirez then scored with a straight steal of home.
The Anteaters added five more runs and chased Floethe in the fourth. Jordan Leyland singled and Reyes walked. Crumlich struck out trying to bunt with two strikes but Madigan followed with an RBI single and Hernandez greeted reliever David Hurlbut with another one. Hilllman was retired but Shaeffer singled home a third run and Hurst knocked in two more with a bases-loaded single. Hurlbut hadn't allowed a run all seasons in 12 innings but was charged with the final two.
UCI added two more runs in the fifth off Ryan Ackland. Three singles loaded the bases before Shaeffer drew a bases-loaded walk and Ramirez singled to left to make it 12-0.
Nick Ramirez's fourth home run of the year , a solo shot to right, broke up the Anteater shutout bid in the sixth and the Titans added two more in the eighth. Ivory Thomas singled and stole second as Richy Pedroza struck out swinging. Ramirez walked and then Matt Orloff sent a double into the left field corner scoring Thomas. A batter later, Michael Lorenzen lined a single off the body of reliever Phillip Ferragamo that scored Ramirez with the Titans' final run of the night.
Christian Coronado pitched the final three innings for Fullerton and went into the ninth with two scoreless under his belt. Pedroza's throwing error allowed the leadoff man Reyes aboard when his throw short-hopped Ramirez at first base. Crumlich singled and Madigan doubled them both home. On the play Pedroza injured his shoulder on the relay throw in and came out of the game. Another Titan error by Orloff - now at short - made just one of those runs earned for Coronado.
The two teams will square off on Saturday with game time slated for 6 p.m. Noe Ramirez will be on the mound for the Titans while the Anteaters will counter with Andrew Thurmond.
