Fullerton, Calif. - Designated hitter Jon Wilhite plated the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run double to the right-centerfield gap in the bottom of the sixth, to lift Cal State Fullerton to an 11-5 non-conference baseball game at Goodwin Field Friday night.
The win boosts Fullerton's overall record to 11-8 and give the Titans their third series win of the year, while UNLV falls to a game below .500 at 9-10.
Wilhite's double brought home two of the five runs the Titans would score off losing pitcher Thomas Whitsett (2-1) in the sixth as Fullerton sent all nine men to the plate and jumped out to a 7-3 lead. Trailing 3-2 coming into the inning, Fullerton connected for six hits off the right-hander, with RBI coming from Joel Weeks (single), Jeff Newman (single) and Josh Fellhauer (triple) in addition to the Titan DH.
All seven runs off Whitsett were earned over his 5 1/3 innings on Friday. He allowed nine hits and walked four without a strikeout in his first loss of the year.
The Titans would not look back despite a pair of runs by UNLV off winning pitcher Jason Dovel that cut the Titan lead to 7-5. Dovel improved to 2-1 after coming on in relief of Daniel Renken with two on and two outs in the top of the sixth. He got the final out of the inning without allowing a run and benefited from the Titans' offensive outburst in the bottom of the inning.
Dovel worked just four batters into the seventh inning, with the last, Michael Brenly, doubling to left driving home Xavier Scruggs who walked, and Braden Walker who reached on a fielding error by Jared Clark. Dovel was lifted after the two-base hit, finishing with just 2/3 of an inning under his belt.
Renken surrendered three runs (one earned) on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out six in his first no-decision of the year.
The Titans added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth off brothers Justin and Marc Baca. Christian Colon was hit by a M. Baca fastball with the bases loaded, then Jared Clark emptied the bases with a double that rattled around in the left field corner to end the Titan scoring.
Adam Joregenson picked up his first save of the year striking out four Rebels over two innings of work to close out the three-hour, fifty-five minute affair.
Josh Fellhauer finished the night with three hits lead the Titans while J.J. Sfera and Brenly each added three for the Rebels. Wilhits, Clark and Brenley all finished with three RBI apiece.
The two squads will meet in the series finale Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
