March 19, 2009
Fullerton, Calif. - Christian Colon had four hits and three Cal State Fullerton pitchers combined on a 4-hitter Thursday night as the No. 4-ranked Titans beat Oral Roberts, 8-3. The win improved Fullerton's record to 14-3 and dropped Oral Roberts to 7-3. Daniel Renken (4-0) got the win with 5.1 innings of one-hit ball. Noe Ramirez went 2.2 innings and Ryan Ackland pitched the ninth. They combined for 13 strikeouts, tying a CSF staff high this season. Offensively, the Titans compiled double-digit basehits for the 11th game in a row in winning for the 13th time in 14 games. The Titans jumped on loser Jerry Sullivan (2-2) for four runs in the first inning. Colon singled and scored on a double to right by Josh Fellhauer. Jared Clark doubled down the left field line to plate Fellhauer and then rode home on Nick Ramirez' sixth homer of the year to right centerfield. Oral Roberts countered with a run in the second. Robert Barbosa was safe on a throwing error by third baseman Gary Brown. He moved to third on a solid single to right by Johnny Roberts and scored when Brown threw home errantly after fielding a grounder by Kyle Price. Colon's two-out triple in the fourth gave Fullerton a 6-1 lead. Jeff Newman was hit by a pitch and Brown had an infield single to set the table. Renken, who struck out nine, walked three men in the sixth and gave way to Noe Ramirez with one out. Price delivered a sacrifice fly to left to make it 6-2 but Ramirez prevented further damage. The Titans got the run back in the seventh. Colon doubled to left center, went to third on a single to right by Fellhauer and came home when rightfielder P. J. Sequeira bobbled the ball. Fullerton's final run came in the eighth when Joe Scott singled, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Colon's single to right. Ackland gave up two hits and a run in the ninth. Seth Furmanek got the RBI with a two-out single. The teams continue the series Friday night at 7 p.m. |
