Titans Shutout in First Game of SDSU Baseball Invitational
March 11, 2010
San Diego, Calif. - Fresno State's Matt Morse (2-1) four-hit Cal State Fullerton en route to a 5-0 complete-game shutout Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Aztec Baseball Invitational at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Titans, shutout for the second time of the year, fall to 4-7 on the year, while the Bulldogs jump above the .500 mark at 7-6.
Morse improved to 2-1 on the year and struck out three Titans in the 2:07 minute affair.
Titan starter Tyler Pill was just as - if not more - dominant than Morse for the first six innings of the ballgame. The Titan right-hander threw just 55 pitches through the first six frames, surrendering just one hit. After a first inning hit by Bulldog leftfielder Bobby Coyle in the first, Pill retired the next 16 batters he faced. He took the loss and drops to 1-2 on the year.
In the seventh, Garrett Weber led off with a single to left, the Bulldog's first hit since Coyle's, and looked to be retired on a tailor-made double-play ball off the bat of Coyle, but Titan second baseman Corey Jones couldn't find the handle resulting in a first and second situation with no outs. After a Pill wild pitch, Dusty Robinson hit his second home run of the year, a towering shot out to left field, to give Fresno a 3-0 lead.
Pill worked the eighth and three straight singles produced another Bulldog run, with Coyle driving it home. Six of the seven hits Pill surrendered came in the seventh and eighth innings.
David Hurlbut relieved Pill in the ninth, and retired the side in order after giving up a leadoff home run by Bulldog's leading home run hitter, Jordan Ribera, who belted his seventh of the year to right.
A first-inning double by Gary Brown and a fifth inning single by Jones was the only Titan offense until the ninth when Carlos Lopez and Nick Ramirez singled to lead off the inning. Brown's double extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Billy Marcoe's eight-game streak came to an end as he flied to right in his only at bat of the afternoon.
The Titans will take on host San Diego State Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. The Titans' Daniel Renken will take on SDSU's Bryan Crabb.
