Fullerton, Calif. - Gary Brown, Carlos Lopez, and Richie Pedroza each had two hits as Cal State Fullerton defeated Japan's Waseda University, 3-0, in a goodwill exhibition held at Goodwin Field Tuesday night.
Kyle Mertins pitched three "staff day" innings allowing just one hit to earn the win for the Titans. Waseda starter Yuki Saito suffered the loss, allowing just a run over four innings of work.
The Titans scored the winning run in the first inning Tuesday night, with three consecutive base hits. Brown's first hit of the night, was a bunt single to get things going with one out. Lopez moved Brown to third with a single to right, and Nick Ramirez scored him with a knock to left.
The Titans scored two more runs in the seventh off of reliever Yuya Fukui. Catcher Zach Tanida led the inning off with a bloop single down the right field line and was sacrificed to second by Matt Orloff. Orloff reached on the play as Fukui's throw went wild but was quickly backed up by the Waseda second baseman. Christian Colon also laid down a sacrifice bunt, and reached on an error, this time by third baseman Yuya Watanabe, scoring Tanida, and moving Orloff to third. Brown singled home Orloff with a grounder up the middle to cap the Titan scoring.
The Titan staff of Mertins, David Hurlbut, Colin O'Connell, Derrick Dingeman and Dylan Floro held the Waseda team to just six hits on the night while striking out nine. Floro pitched the ninth and picked up the save.
First baseman Koji Udaka, catcher Shota Sugiyama and centerfielder Tatsuya Oishi accounted for Waseda's offense, each tallying a pair of hits in the loss.
Stats from Tuesday night's exhibition do not count towards Fullerton's overall totals.
The Titans will play four games this weekend in the San Diego State Tournament against Fresno State, San Diego State, the University of San Diego and UAB (Alabama-Birmingham). On the hill Thursday afternoon against Fresno State, will be Tyler Pill (1-1, 4.82 ERA).
