Titans Topple Aztecs, 10-5

March 7, 2006

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - No. 7 Cal State Fullerton scored seven times in the bottom of the second inning, capped by a three-run double by catcher Cory Vanderhook, and beat Tony Gwynn's San Diego State ball club, 10-5, Tuesday night at Goodwin Field.

Cal State Fullerton improved to 11-6 on the season and 7-1 at home in a tune-up for their three-game weekend series with visiting East Carolina at Goodwin Field. The Aztecs fall to six games under .500 (6-12), dropping their eighth road contest of the season.

Fullerton batted eleven hitters in the bottom of the second, plating seven runs on six hits in retaliation for the Aztecs posting the first run of the game in the top half of the inning. Aztec starter Ronnie Lindsey took the brunt of the damage, giving up six earned runs in just 1.1 innings, dropping his season record to 0-1.

Justin Klipp, the beneficiary of the Titan offensive outburst, improved to 2-0 on the year, tossing two innings of the pre-determined "staff day" that saw seven Titan arms step on the mound. Right-handed closer Vinnie Pestano finished the parade, tossing 1.1 innings of relief to pick up his fifth save of the year.

San Diego State chipped away at the Fullerton lead scoring once in the third on a Jordan Swaydan RBI groundout, and three times in the seventh, with two of those runs coming from a Quinten Berry home run off John Estes, to get within two at 7-5. But Fullerton tacked on runs by RBI-hits by Brett Pill (double), Clark Hardman (single) and Joe Scott (single) in the seventh, eighth and ninth to put the game out of reach.

Fullerton's Bryan Harris was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, as he picked up a game-high three hits with Justin Turner, Pill and Vanderhook following with two apiece.

SDSU's Brock Ungricht led the Aztecs with two hits.

Fullerton will play host to the ECU Pirates this weekend at Goodwin Field. Expected to start are Wes Roemer (3-0, 1.75 ERA), Lauren Gagnier (3-2, 3.28 ERA) and Dustin Miller (3-1, 4.56 ERA), Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Game Times will be 7 p.m., 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively. For ticket information, call (714) 278-CSUF or visit the Cal State Fullerton athletic web page at fullertontitans.com.

NOTES:Titan situational hurler Ryan Paul got a chance to extend a bit, throwing a full inning and striking out the side. Paul has been used mostly in match-up situations, typically seeing just one batter an outing...Of the Titans 14 hits, six of them were for extra bases (five doubles and a triple)... Scott's RBI-single in the ninth was both his first career hit and RBI.
