Fullerton, Calif. - Gary Brown, Corey Jones and Christian Colon combined to go 6-for-7 and scored eight runs at the top of the Titan line-up as Cal State Fullerton handily defeated its Alumni, 18-3, in a scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Goodwin Field.
More than 60 Titan baseball Alumni were in attendance for the first game between the two sides since 2007's 7-4 Alumni victory. The past two contests have been washed out by rain.
The 2010 squad got on the board early and often, scoring four times in each of the first three frames off right-handers Cory Arbiso (2006-08), Lauren Gagnier (2004-06) and Neil Walton (2003-05), and then twice more in the fourth off southpaw Dave Pherrin (2005-06). The Titans pounded out 22 hits on the afternoon with both Jones and Matt Orloff connecting for three hits apiece. Jones was just a homer away from hitting for the cycle - tripling, doubling and singling in successive at bats.
The Alumni's fifth pitcher of the afternoon Jim Foley (1988) was the first to hold the Titans scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jake Moon (2000) and Chris Robinson (1988-91) and Mark Chavez (1995-96) also tossed scoreless frames in relief.
The Alumni were hitless off Titan right-hander Tyler Pill for 3.1 innings before Baltimore Orioles infielder Justin Turner (2003-2006) singled in a run to also break the shutout. Coming home on the play was Chris Powell (1991-92) who was hit by Pill then stole second to set up the run. Powell also mad a coupe of fine defensive plays in the outfield.
Pill worked four innings on the afternoon struck out one and walked one to earn the "victory." Pill, a sophomore also got to face his brother, Brett, who was a Titan from 2004-2006. The the younger Pill held the older Pill hitless in two at-bats, but the San Francisco Giants prospect, Brett, did sting a line drive to center, where Gary Brown made a spawning, diving catch for the second out of the second inning.
The Alumni scored twice in the sixth inning off righty Colin O'Connell. Jared Clark (2005-2009) doubled home Bobby Andrews (2003-04) who had doubled to lead off the inning. Clark moved to second on a John Curtis (2004-07) single and then came home on an O'Connell wild pitch. Curtis finished 2-for-2 with a double and a single and was the only Alumni with multiple hits. The Alumni finished with eight total hits.
The 2010 squad padded their lead in the eighth inning courtesy of two Alumni errors and a three-run home run by second baseman Joey Siddons off Dan Ricabal(1993-94). It was one of two homers on the day, with Nick Ramirez providing the other, a three-run shot, in the second inning off Gagnier.
O'Connell worked three innings of relief (2 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K), and Derrick Dingeman and Ramirez each provided 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth.
The 2010 Titans will continue to practice and scrimmage thought January and February up until their 2010 season opener against Oregon on Feb. 19 at Goodwin Field.
