FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's and women's cross country will head to UC Riverside for the Highlander Invitational on Saturday. The race will be at the UCR Ag Ops Course. The men's competition for the 8k meter race is set to begin at 8:00 a.m. while the women are running the 5k at 8:40 a.m.
Along with the Titans, the competition will feature the hosts UC Riverside, Cal Baptist, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, San Diego, UC Irvine and others.
"This is our final tune-up for our full squad," head coach John Elders said. "The expectation is to have a positive result and take that momentum into the Big West Championships. I feel good about both squads and this is the healthiest we've been all year and the kids are really fit. This is a weekend we could really compete well and have our best competition of the season. Every indication is that we are ready to rock and roll."
The men continue to improve week to week as they have battled with injuries. The men were led last time out by Samuel Pimentel, who was the top Titan finisher with an 8K time of 25:15.0, good for 25th place overall at the Roy Griak Invitational. Jorge Sanchez was the second Titan finisher with a time of 25:26.2 and Jacob Smith rounded the top three scorers at 25:48.4.
The women look to continue to piece together strong performances. Last race at the Roy Griak Invitational, Trinity Ruelas' 6K time of 21:47.9 was tops for the Titans as she took 12th place overall. Samantha Huerta placed second for the Titans and took 15th place in her first race of the season.
