Short Qualifies in 400

Aujstin, Texas - Ciara Short qualified for the national finals in the 400 and advanced to the semifinals in the 200 along with hurdler Lauren Williams in Friday's action for Cal State Fullerton at the 2010 NCAA West Region Track and Field Meet at the University of Texas.

Short ran third in the 400 in a time of 52.78 to become one of 12 advancing to Eugene, Oregon, next week. In the 200, she runs Saturday in the semifinals after a school record time of 23.62 left her tenth iin the quarterfinals.

Williams finished 11th in the 100 meter hurdles at 13.53. She needs to be in the top 12 today to advance.

Missing a trip to nationals by one place was Jameena Hunt in the discus. She was tenth after the first round by was passed by three competitors and finished 13th at 163 feet, 1 inch. The 12th place distance was 163-8.

Also failing to advance were Laron Brown and Lamar Oliphant in the high jump. Both cleared the opening height of 2.01 meters (6 feet, 7 inches) but missed at 2.06 (6-9) with Brown just clicking the bar with his heel on one attempt. Both tied for 34th place among 48 jumpers.

Carolyn Ellis ran 37th in the 3000 steeplechase at 10:57.24 and Julius Joseph was 46th in the hammer at 167-1.
