May 8, 2011

Eagle Rock, Calif. - Lauren Williams in the women's 100 meter hurdles and Gail Munoz in the women's 1500 meters gave solid performances Saturday at the Occidental Invitational in their final races before next weekend's Big West Conference Track and Field Championships at UC Irvine.

Williams ran second in her specialty in a time of 13.47 seconds while Munoz beat her personal best in the 1500 by about 6 seconds with a time of 4:35.62 to claim 12th place.

"Both Lauren and Gail set themselves up nicely for the Big West meet," said Head Coach John Elders. "Lauren banged the last hurdle but it was a good tuneup as she prepares to win her fourth Big West hurdles title.

"Gail has come back well from an injury and she beat her PR from the 2008 season."
Only a half dozen Titans competed among almost 1,000 athletes.

In the pole vault, Ginny English was fourth among the women at 11 feet, 7 3/4 inches. Former Indiana State star Kylie Hutson set a meet record, winning at 14 feet, 9 inches. On the men's side, Andrew Sullivan finished 13th at 15 feet even while Ryan Simioni failed to make his opening height.

Yomaira Hernandez ran 37th in the women's 5,000 meters in 18:21.11.

The Big West meet is Friday and Saturday.
