FULLERTON, Calif.—Cal State Fullerton continued its strong start to the 2013 spring season, as both the men and women's teams came in first and third respectively at the Ben Brown Invitational over the weekend.
Over 1,344 track and field spectators made their way out to the Titan Track and Field Complex to watch more than 40 teams compete over the two-day span.
"I tip my hat off to my coaching staff for helping to run what was a very smooth meet this weekend," said head track and field coach John Elders. "I'm really happy for some of our young kids that got to come out and showcase their talents."
The host Titans put up a 137 points on the weekend to edge Big West rivals UC Irvine (124) and Long Beach State (116) on the men's side of things, while the Fullerton women posted 91 points overall as they finished third, just behind USC (182) and Long Beach State (95).
Walter Whitaker and Javon May led the Fullerton men , Whitaker (47-05.00) took second in the triple jump, while May (54.44) placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. AJ Pulice (15:24.34) also placed second in the 5000-meter run in his first ever apperence in the event.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Perry (15:16.10) also had a strong showing, as he placed seventh in the 5000-meter run, while fellow freshman teammate Jeff Little (15:22.96) finished just behind him in 10th.
Jasmyne Davis' (27-01.25) third place finish in the triple jump served as the best mark for the Titan women on the weekend, while Alexis Stewart finished right behind her in ninth place (12.31).
Katie Bathgate placed 12th and set a personal best in the 5000-meter run. Jasiri Blake (12.27) had an impressive sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash, while also recording a personal best. Casey Candelaria (2:16.28) also placed fifth in the 800-meter run while finishing 21st in the 1500-meter run (4:53.56).
The Titans resume their spring season this weekend at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, California.
