Baseball (42-14, 17-7)...
Cal State Fullerton has advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 18th consecutive season and the 31st time in the program's 35-year Div. I existence. For the eighth time, all since 2000, the Titans are hosting a 4-team regional tournament.
The nationally No. 2 seeded Titans are the regional's No. 1 seed and they will face No. 4 seed Utah at 7 p.m. on Friday night. No. 2 seed Georgia Southern faces No. 3 seed Gonzaga at 3 p.m. to open the tourney.
Fullerton received an at-large bid after finishing the regular season with a 4-game winning streak to take second place in the Big West Conference behind UC Irvine, which is the No. 6 national seed and is hosting its inaugural regional. Cal Poly also received an at-large berth for its inaugural playoff trip and the Mustangs were sent to Arizona State.
Utah won the Mountain West Conference post-season tournament to earn an automatic berth despite the only losing record (26-29) in the 64-team field. It's Utah's first NCAA appearance since 1960. Utah has been to one College World Series, going 2-2 in 1951. The Utes are 0-1 all-time vs. Fullerton. Utah won four of five games this season from TCU, which won a 3-game series at Fullerton to open the Titans' home schedule.
Georgia Southern won the Southern Conference Tournament with a 4-0 record and brings a lofty 42-15 season mark west. The Eagles are making their 12th trip to the Regionals but first since 2002. They have made two (1973 and 1990) CWS appearances but have never played Fullerton.
Gonzaga won its first West Coast Conference championship by capturing both the regular season pennant and the tourney title, 2-0, over Loyola Marymount. The Bulldogs are 35-16 and are making their 8th NCAA appearance but first since 1981 when they were in Tempe along with the Titans. Gonzaga is 3-7 all-time vs. the Titans, but 2-0 in NCAA play, winning twice at the 1980 regional in Tucson.
Fullerton wrapped up its No. 2 national seed with a 4-game winning streak last week. A 7-run first inning fueled a 9-1 win over Pepperdine on Tuesday night and then the Titans swept Long Beach State, 4-3, 7-1 and 15-3.
Track & Field...
Cal State Fullerton will send nine student-athletes to the NCAA West Regional Meet that begins Friday in Eugene, Oregon. Five women and four men will attempt to qualify for nationals, which are scheduled for June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Titans' regional contingent is led by sprinter Ciara Short, who is the first Titan to qualify for three separate events -- the 100, 200 and 400 meters. She will concentrate on the 400 meters, however. Other Titan women qualifiers are Jameena Hunt in the shot put and discus, Kelly MacLean in the pole vault, Juliane Masciana in the 3000 meter steeplechase and Lauren Williams in the 100 meter hurdles. Masciana is ranked No. 4 in the region and also qualified for the 5000 meters but will pass on that race. Williams also is ranked No. 4 in the region in the hurdles.
On the men's side, Johnathan Golden and LaRon Brown will compete in the high jump. Golden is tied for the third best mark in the region while Brown is tied for No. 6. Garrett Myers will compete in the long jump (ranked 10th) and triple jump (11th) and Andrew Sullivan competes in the pole vault.
The top five finishers in each region automatically advance to the NCAA Finals. Seven at-large spots will be selected for each event after the regional meets are completed. To be eligible for an at-large spot an athlete must place in the top 12 at the regional. From that pool of athletes the athletes with the seven best seasonal best marks (including regional) will earn an at-large bid.
< p> Johnathan Golden is currently tied for 16th nationally in the high jump, Masciana is ranked 22nd in the steeplechase, and Williams is ranked 24th in the hurdles. If you are in the top 25 nationally you have a pretty good chance of getting an at-large selection.
Men's Basketball...
Former Cal State Fullerton assistant coach Mark Warkentien (1978-79 and 1979-80) recently was selected NBA Executive of the Year. The general manager of the Denver Nuggets is a 1976 CSF graduate. He played basketball at Ramona High School in Riverside and Riverside City College under Head Coach Bill Mulligan, whom he followed to Saddleback College. Warkentien coached the UC Riverside women's team to an 18-7 record in 1977-78.
Former Titan guard Josh Akognon participated in a draft workout with the Sacramento Kings last week. The NBA draft is June 25. The Kings have the Nos. 4, 23 and 31 picks and are looking for a point guard. Midway through this season they traded away former Titan Bobby Brown to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
And former Titan guard Frank Robinson has been invited back to training camp with the Atlanta Hawks. He surprised the Hawks with his strong performance last year and a season in Europe should give him an extra boost for this tryout.
Women's Basketball...
Alicya Crisp of Grant High School in Sacramento has signed a national letter of intent to continue her academic and playing career with the Titans beginning with the 2009-10 season.
Crisp joins previously announced signees Jaslyn Cosey (Torrance, CA/Millikan HS), Lauren Bushong (Yucca Valley, CA/Yucca Valley HS), Simone Lutu (Carson, CA/The Windward School) and Mya Olivier (Laguna Beach, CA/Mater Dei HS) for the 2009-10 season.
Crisp, a 5-foot-6 guard,, was a three-year letterwinner for the Pacers, averaging double digits in scoring in each of her varsity seasons while earning All-Metro League honors as a junior and senior. Last season, Crisp averaged 16 points and shot 48 percent from the field to help Grant HS to a 24-6 record and an 8-2 mark in Metro League play. The Pacers advanced to the third round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.
