Baseball (32-15, 14-4)...
The Titans close out the home portion of the regular season this week with four crucial games.
Tuesday night they host UCLA in a non-conference game with national seeding implications. Friday through Sunday NIGHTS they host UC Riverside in a 3-game Big West Conference series that will set the table for the final weekend tussle at second-place Long Beach State.
The Titans are coming off their 11th consecutive series victory as they beat UC Santa Barbara, 9-7 and 9-3, around a 7-1 loss. The Titans scored the first 9 runs of the series and the last 8 but were outscored 17-2 in between.
A rare display of power triggered the Friday win. JD Davis (No. 3), Michael Lorenzen (No. 1) and Matt Chapman (No. 2) gave Fullerton its first multi-HR game of the season and ran the team total to 8. Dylan Floro faced only 15 men over the first 5 innings but faltered in the sixth and seventh and needed relief help from Koby Gauna and Lorenzen.
The Titans left 13 men on base -- 10 in scoring position -- on Saturday and Kenny Matthews (5-1) suffered his first collegiate loss. The Gauchos scored 4 times on the Titan bullpen.
Sunday's see-saw affair was decided in the late innings. Fullerton overcame a 3-1 deficit. Lorenzen tied the game in the fifth with a 2-run double. An unearned run put Fullerton ahead, 4-3, in the eighth. Fullerton broke it open with a 5-run ninth keyed by Lorenzen's single and UCSB misplays. The final two runs scored on a UCSB wild pitch and error.
Softball (20-31, 8-13)...
The Titans finished in a tie for fifth place with UC Riverside after going 1-2 with UC Davis in the final series of the regular season.
On Friday, the Titans dropped the opener, 5-0, as Justine Vega tossed a 2-hitter. But they came back to "mercy rule" the Aggies, 9-1, in the nightcap with a walk-off 8-run fifth inning. Errors prolonged the frame and set the stage for 2-run doubles by Lauren Mario and Adri Martinez.
The latter had 3 more hits on Saturday but the Titans dropped a see-saw 5-3 affair. Ashley Carter singled home one run and tripled in another in the fourth for a 2-1 lead. But the Aggies tied it in the fifth and scored twice in the sixth for a 4-2 advantage. Nicole Johnson's RBI double closed the game to 4-3 in the bottom half before the Aggies added an insurance run in the seventh.
Outdoor Track & Field...
Ashley Sims, Katie Wilson and Morgan Thompson spearheaded a strong showing in the sprints to highlight Cal State Fullerton's efforts at the 2012 Big West Conference Track and Field Championships at UC Irvine last Friday and Saturday.
The trio placed in the individual sprints and teamed with Krizia Apelar to win the 4x100 relay for the second year in a row to lead the Titan women to a sixth-place finish with 63 points. The men finished eighth with 16 points.
Sims took second in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Wilson was second in the 400 and fifth in the 200 while Thompson was second in the 200 and third in the 400.
UC Davis nipped UC Santa Barbara for the women's team title, 170 to 169.50. The Gauchos did win the men's title with 179 points to 150 for runnerup Long Beach State.
The Titans also got significant points from Jasmyne Davis, a neophyte in the triple jump, who finished sixth in only her fifth competition. Kara Kalmar was fourth in the women's pole vault and Danielle Morton was sixth in the javelin.
On the men's side, Walter Whitaker placed fourth in the triple jump and Bryan Luther and Aaron Ray ran seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 200 meters. They also contributed to a fourth-place showing in the 4x100 relay.
The Titans expect to get a few berths in the NCAA West Regional Meet that runs May 24-26 in Austin, Texas.
Men's Soccer...
Former Titan forward Kevin Venegas scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory for the Minnesota Stars of the NASL over the Carolina RailHawks in front of 2,168 in attendance Saturday night to help his team stay unbeaten. It was his first professional goal.
The two-time (2010-11) All-Big West Conference first-team selection received a pass on the left flank from Martin Nunez, and with his trademark step over, cut inside and unleashed a right footed blast that caught the goalkeeper wrong footed and settled in the top right corner of the goal.
Miscellaneous...
Former Cal State Fullerton basketball and baseball player Vern Stewart from the mid-1960s has passed away. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and family.
University Village Athlete of the Week...
Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Michael Lorenzen (Anaheim / Fullerton HS) batted and pitched the Titans to a series win at UC Santa Barbara. He saved both wins, had 4 hits including his first home run and drove in 5 runs on the weekend.
