July 25, 2005
Fullerton, Calif. - A benefit motorcycle ride will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, to support the family of former West Covina police officer Mike Newton, brother and husband, respectively, of former Cal State Fullerton softball players Pam Newton and Sue Lewis.
Newton, a 25-year veteran of the force, was placed on medical leave in December, 2004, when he was diagnosed with leukodystrophy, a disease which affects the white blood cells in the brain and for which there is no cure. A month later, Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery and is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation while working to keep the family solvent. Son Brandon, the oldest of four children, is holding off on college to help at home.
The ride, "Scootin' for Newton," starts at 9 a.m. at the West Covina City Hall parking lot and will go to Tom's Farms in Corona and back. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. At approximately 11:30 a.m., a Bar-B-Q luncheon will be held at the West Covina Senior Citizens Center.
A trust account has been established to provide Mike a fulltime caregiver and a communications device. Checks payable to "Newton Family Trust" can be mailed in c/o Donna Kading, 6550 Flagstone Place, Etiwanda, CA, 91739 - (909) 331-6272 - email@example.com.
