FULLERTON, Calif. – After having one of the most successful years in school history, Cal State Fullerton has claimed the Big West Commissioner's Cup for the first time in school history.
The Titans averaged 137.1 points over their seven spring sports, upping their overall average to a Cup-winning 116.8 points. Fullerton won spring season titles in baseball, softball and men's track & field, while also tying for second in women's tennis. Those results came on the heels of a division crown in men's soccer, a pair of top three finishes in cross country and a top four finish in men's basketball, all helping the program take the Cup for the first time. Cal State Fullerton is the first Cup champion other than Long Beach State or UC Santa Barbara since former member Pacific won the first two Cups from 1998-2000. Fullerton's spring average is also the best showing in the season since LBSU put up an average of 142.5 points in the spring of 2014.
In determining a champion, the following round robin sports have points awarded on the basis of the final regular season standings, including a 20-point bonus for the champion. These sports are baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, women's tennis and indoor volleyball. In the sports of cross country, golf, men's tennis, track & field, women's beach volleyball and women's water polo, the points are awarded based on finish at the Conference Championship. In the case of ties in all sports, points shall be awarded by combining points and dividing them equally among the tied teams.
A complete recap of the point system is available here.
It has been a special year for Titan Athletics, with five teams reaching the NCAA Tournament, the highest tally for a single year in program history. Both men's and women's soccer won the Big West Tournament in the fall to advance round of 64.
On the hardwood, the men's basketball team claimed the Big West Tournament title for the third time in program history.
The softball squad won the Big West Championship for the third-straight year and advanced to the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Final. Also, on the diamond, the baseball squad earned its 30th conference title in program history and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 27th straight year. The squad just upset Stanford to win the Regional Championship and advanced to their 14th Super Regional in program history, which is second most all-time behind Florida State (16).
The men's track and field squad won the Big West Championship for the second straight year and their season is not over as the men's 4x100-meter relay is set to compete at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday in Eugene, Ore. It is the first time the Titans have been represented at the NCAA Championships since 2011.
The Big West Commissioner's Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is awarded to the institution with the highest average point total following the 18 Conference sport seasons. Points are not awarded if the institution or conference does not sponsor the sport.
