Five Titan Legends Inducted into Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday
FULLERTON, Calif. – Over 200 loyal Cal State Fullerton fans and supporters packed the Embassy Suites in Brea to honor and induct the seventh class of the Cal State Fullerton Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday evening. Tiffany Boyd (Softball, 1991-93), Mel Franks (CSUF Sports Information Director, 1980-2012), George Horton (Baseball: Player, 1975-76; Associate Head Coach, 1991-96; Head Coach, 1997-07), Kurt Suzuki (Baseball, 2002-04) and Kathy Van Wyk (Softball, 1982) made up the prestigious class.
It was certainly a night to remember for all, as the five inductees shared stories and reminisced during their time at Cal State Fullerton. Whether it was Horton talking about leading the Titans to the national championship in 2004 or Kathy Van Wyk remembering her NCAA record 35 straight Division I wins or Franks speaking to how he covered all of it, the night was a reminder to everyone, just how special Titan Athletics is.
"This was such a humbling night," said Boyd. "I'd forgotten just how strong the Titan spirit really is. The energy in the room was just incredible."
Suzuki and Horton became the ninth and 10th former baseball members to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, while Boyd and Van Wyk represented the sixth and seventh former softball members to be inducted. Franks represented just the second athletics staff member to be inducted, joining former Athletics Director Neale Stoner.
The night was filled with laughs, storytelling, good food and even better people. The evening started with a cocktail hour where Titans new and old were able to reconnect and catch up before the induction ceremony began at 7:30 pm PT. Athletics Director Jim Donovan and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Berenecea Johnson Eanes were in attendance to present the awards to the deserving Titans.
Over $10,000 was raised for Titan Athletics on the evening. Click below to read the bio for each inductee.
