WILLIE HAGAN Interim University President Dr. Willie Hagan, previously vice president for administration and chief financial officer of California State University, Fullerton, was named interim president of the university effective Jan. 9, 2012. Hagan will serve in the capacity until June 11, when Dr. Mildred Garcia will assume the office and succeed President Milton Gordon, who recently retired after serving as president of the university since 1990. Also on June 11, Hagan will become interim president at CSU Dominguez Hills, filling the chair vacated by Dr. Garcia. Hagan joined Cal State Fullerton in 1996, overseeing the university's administrative functions and has provided increasing levels of service to the campus during a period of unprecedented growth. From 2000 to 2003, he also served as interim vice president of university advancement and was instrumental in the reorganization of that division. Beginning in 2005, Hagan assumed responsibility for university financial operations, serving as the chief financial officer for the university. Hagan holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Connecticut and a master of fine arts degree from UCLA. Before coming to CSUF, he served as associate vice president for administration at the University of Connecticut, and as a lobbyist for the University of Connecticut and the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education at the state and federal level. |
| DR. SILAS ABREGO Acting University Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Silas H. Abrego joined the Titan family in 1985 and on January 1, 2011, was appointed Acting Vice President for Student Affairs. As the university's chief student affairs officer, he has the responsibility for managing the following units within the Division of Student Affairs: Athletic Academic Services, Career Center, College-based Assistant Deans for Student Affairs, Dean of Students, Disabled Student Services, Educational Partnerships, Federal TRIO Programs, Financial Aid, Guardian Scholars Program, Housing and Residence Life, International Education and Exchange, Student Academic Services, Student Health and Counseling Center, the University Learning Center and the WoMen's Center/Adult Re-entry/Veterans Student Services. He is also responsible for Intercollegiate Athletics and works collaboratively with Associated Students, Incorporated. Prior to coming to Cal State Fullerton, Dr. Abrego served as coordinator of the California Education Policy Fellowship Program at the Institute for Educational Leadership, Tomas Rivera Center at Claremont Graduate School and later assistant to the Dean/Director of Special Projects, School of Education, University of Southern California. Dr. Abrego received his M.A. and Ed.D. In Higher Education, Governance, and Management from the University of Southern California. |
| BRIAN QUINN Athletics Director Brian Quinn assumed the post of director of athletics at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 14, 2002. In June of 2007, he was named the Astroturf Division I, West Region, Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The award is based upon commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities. Quinn has overseen the department's successful efforts to recover from one state fiscal crisis, endure another and improve the overall student-athlete academic performance and remodel Titan Gym. Cal State Fullerton student-athletes currently mirror the student body in graduation rate and CSF was acknowledged for its "Outstanding Degree Completion Program" for 2005-06 by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. The department also recently received a 10-year re-certification from the NCAA and surpassed its goals for complying with Title IX participation. Over the course of the last eight years, the Titans have outperformed the rest of the Big West Conference in the NACDA Cup Standings, topped by five appearances by the baseball team at the College World Series. The Titans won their fourth national title in 2004 and placed third in both 2003 and 2006 and seventh in 2007 and 2009. The women's soccer team has made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the "Sweet 16" in 2005 and the second round in 2006, while the softball team in 2007 became the first Big West squad to reach the Super Regional round. The men's basketball team won two games in the post-season NIT in 2005 and made its first appearance in 30 years in the NCAA Tournament in 2008. Quinn was president of Div. I-AAA (no football) of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics for 2010-11. He also recently ended a four-year term on the NCAA Division I baseball committee and chaired the West Region. He was the chair of the athletic directors for many years in the West Coast Conference and was the chair of the NCAA men's volleyball committee, as well as serving on the board of directors for USA volleyball. Quinn was the athletic director at Loyola Marymount University from 1985 through 1998. He then dedicated his time towards completing the Burns Recreation Center and Aquatics Center at LMU. He also directed the athletic fundraising efforts as executive director of athletic development. An athletic scholarship has been endowed in his name at LMU. During his years as director of athletics at LMU the Lions won nine West Coast Conference titles and advanced to the NCAA men's basketball tournament three times and once to the NIT. The basketball team advanced to the Final Eight and led the nation in scoring. The baseball team advanced to the College World Series where it defeated the No. 1seed, LSU. Women's volleyball won numerous conference championships as well and the women's crew team won the national championship. Quinn graduated from Loyola (1963) with a degree in business administration and received his masters degree from Long Beach State. He was a long-time coach and athletic administrator at the high school level in the Irvine Unified School District and taught volleyball classes for Irvine Valley College for six years. Quinn was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame both at his high school (Serra HS) and university (LMU). He was the captain of the basketball team and MVP and three-year starter on the baseball team. The basketball team was the WCC champion and defeated USC in the NCAA tournament. He also was a member of the Balboa Bay Club national champion volleyball team. He continues to be an avid beach volleyball player. Quinn and his wife of 48 years (6/22/63), Collette, live in Manhattan Beach. They have four adult children: Andrew, who lives in Georgia; Janet, who lives in New York; Suzanne and Maureen. The Quinns have 12 grandchildren -- Brendan, Ryan, Owen Kiernan, Dylan, Colin Brian, Mary Frances, Erin, Margaret Kathleen, Gabriel, Barrett, Macklin Ryan and Lily, born on March 19. Quinn is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. |
![]() | JULIE BOWSE Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator Julie Bowse assumed this post on July 1, 2010. She had been Cal State Fullerton's full-time compliance officer since June 1, 2005, after stepping away from a seven-year stint as head women's gymnastics coach and 15 years with the gymnastics program. As Julie Knight, she competed for the inaugural Titan gymnastics team in 1976 and won three All-American awards on vault, floor exercise and all-around. Her coaching career began at SCATS in Huntington Beach and continued with a tour at the Clovis Academy of Gymnastics and Dance in her native Central California. She returned to her college roots in 1994 as an assistant to Coach Lynn Rogers, eventually serving as associate head coach in 1999 when she was selected Big West Conference coach of the year. Knight has chaired three national organizations and served on the committee for the 2003 World Championships held in Anaheim. She has brevet status as an international gymnastics judge. She and her husband, Scott, live in Fullerton. |
![]() | DR. STEPHAN WALK Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Stephan Walk was appointed Faculty Athletics Representative in 2004, succeeding Dr. Lee Gilbert, who served in the role for 12 years. Dr. Walk joined the faculty at Cal State Fullerton in 1994 after graduating from Michigan State with a dual doctoral degree in Kinesiology and Sociology. Effective August of 2007, he will the chair of the kinesiology department. Dr. Walk is a sport sociologist whose research focuses on risk-taking, pain, and injury among athletes. He is the author of three publications in the past year, including two contributions to the Berkshire Encyclopedia of World Sport. In 2004, he was elected President of the North America Society for the Sociology of Sport. He has also served as Chair of the University Curriculum Committee, the Athletics Advisory Council, and a number of athletics search committees. Dr. Walk's responsibilities are to function as the representative of Cal State Fullerton and its faculty in its relationship with the NCAA and the Big West Conference, with particular attention to academic integrity, governance and rules compliance, and student-athlete welfare. Dr. Walk and his wife, Kim, live in Tustin with his young stepson, Henry. |
![]() | STEVE DITOLLA Senior Associate Athletics Director Steve DiTolla returned for his second tenure in the Titans' athletic department on July 16, 2001. Overall, he has been a Titan for more than 16 years. The 1979 graduate of the University of Arizona and former Wildcats baseball player began his professional career as assistant ticket manager with the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. He then spent five years as athletics accountant and director of promotions and marketing at the University of Colorado. DiTolla first served the CSF campus from 1985 to 1992 as associate athletics director/business affairs. He also had a short term as interim athletics director in 1991, hiring back Head Coach Augie Garrido and then Associate Head Coach George Horton. In 1993, he left intercollegiate athletics to become vice president of Jammin sports apparel in Anaheim for eight years. He is also was a coach for the 2006 and 2007 CIF Champion El Dorado High School Football program and now assists at Yorba Linda High School, working with the defensive backs at the Varsity level. The Denver native and his wife, Gail, live in Placentia. He has two sons - Justin and Brandon and three step-sons - Kyle, Brandon, and Chad. |
![]() | MEL FRANKS Senior Associate Athletics Director/Sports Information Director Mel Franks has served more than three decades in the Titans' athletic department directing the media relations effort. Appointed on Aug. 14, 1980, he is second in seniority among California Div. I sports information directors (San Jose State's Lawrence Fan preceded him by five weeks). The 1970 graduate of Arizona State played freshman basketball at Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Cypress College for one season of football and basketball before heading to Tempe. He began his professional career as a sportswriter for the defunct Daily News Tribune in Fullerton. He then spent six years in the public relations department of the California Angels. He later served as the official scorer in Anaheim for the 1980 season and has been the backup scorer doing about 15 games per season since 2006. He is a founding director and past president of the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame. The Chicago native and his wife, Nancy, live in Norco. They have two married adult children - Jason and Traci - and three young grandchildren - Owen, Jenna and James. Springer spaniels "Woody" and "Sam" are the resident "children." |
![]() | ROBERT SCIALDONE Associate Athletics Director/Business Affairs Rob Scialdone became the chief financial officer for Titan athletics on Aug. 2, 2001. He is in charge of accounting for all of the income and expenses as they are processed through Associated Students, the California State Fullerton Philanthropic Foundation, and the State of California. Scialdone attended Claremont McKenna College until 1995 and graduated in 1996 with a B.A. in Economics from Cal State Fullerton. Scialdone returned to Claremont and received a master's degree in finance in 2000 from Claremont Graduate University. Prior to coming to Fullerton he worked as a corporate strategy and financial advisor to start-up companies and as a senior financial analyst for a mortgage REIT. He and his wife, Krista, and young children, Sawyer, Tatum and Talyn, live in Yorba Linda. |

MEREDITH BASIL Associate Athletics Director/Athletics Academic Services/Title IX Deputy Coordinator Dr. Meredith Basil re-joined the Titan family in August, 2011, as the associate director of athletics/director, athletics academic services. Dr. Basil maintains close oversight of all academic support programming and proactive academic monitoring of CSUF's student-athletes, to ensure they meet institutional and NCAA continuing eligibility requirements. Through close collaboration with the department of athletics and campus support offices, she works to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the academic support and welfare needs of CSUF's student-athletes are being met. From June, 2010, to August, 2011, she served as director of the Student-Athlete Academic Center at Florida International University (FIU), and the director of athletic academic services at CSUF from April, 2007, to May, 2010. Prior to these roles, she was the coordinator of academic support program for student-athletes at her alma mater, American University in Washington, D.C., also serving as the head diving coach from 2000-2002. As a student-athlete, she had a decorated career, earning the Colonial Athletic Conference Diver of the Year Award for three consecutive years and setting team records for 1 meter (six dives), 3 meter (6 dives) and 3 meter (11 dives). She also earned a conference All-Academic Team award each of her three years and was twice named a Verizon/ESPN Academic All American and twice a CSCAA Academic All American. Dr. Basil holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in psychology from American, where her research focused on biological and experiential factors contributing to individual differences in spatial ability. She currently resides in Irvine with her husband Trevor, and their son, Shane. |
![]() | KELLIE NEWMAN Assistant Athletics Director/Marketing Kellie Newman assumed her post on Nov. 1, 2010. She had been Cal State Fullerton's marketing coordinator since Sept. 1, 2008. As Kellie Cox, she was a member of the Titans' women's soccer team from 2001 through 2005. She was selected the Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year in 2004 and Offensive Player of the Year in 2005. Kellie received her bachelor's degree in 2006 in business administration and her MBA in 2008. She and her husband, Andy, the men's basketball associate head coach, live in Newport Beach. |
![]() | AARON TAPPER Assistant Athletics Director/Facilities Aaron Tapper came to Cal State Fullerton in September of 2006 and serves as the assistant athletics director for facilities. He oversees all aspects of the Titans' athletic facilities. Tapper attended the University of the Pacific where he received his B.A. in sports sciences in 2002 and an M.A. in educational administration in 2004. Prior to coming to Fullerton he was the supervisor of facilities and operations in University of the Pacific's intercollegiate athletics department. He and his wife, Michelle, the assistant athletics director for compliance live in Chino along with their daughter, Hunter. |
<![]() | MICHELLE TAPPER Acting Assistant Athletics Director/Compliance Michelle Tapper assumed the position of acting assistant athletics director, compliance on May 1, 2011. She was previously Cal State Fullerton's compliance coordinator. Tapper joined the Titan family in 2005 where she spent two seasons as Cal State Fullerton's volunteer assistant softball coach before assuming a full-time coaching position in August, 2007. She coached for three years before starting her administrative career in 2010. During her time as an assistant coach with the Titans, Tapper helped Fullerton's defense set a school record for fielding percentage at .972 in 2006 and post the second-highest mark in school history in 2007 with a mark of .971. She also shared in NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Tapper had a brilliant four-year playing career (2002-05) at Big West Conference rival Pacific, earning all-conference honors three times. As a senior, Tapper earned first-team all-conference laurels and NFCA All-West Region honors after hitting .365 with 4 home runs and 40 RBI. She was named Big West Player of the Week for three consecutive weeks in 2005, marking the first time in the history of the Big West that a player had accomplished that feat. She finished her career with the Tigers ranked in the top 10 in numerous categories. Tapper graduated from Pacific in 2005 with a B.A. in sports sciences and a teaching credential in physical education. She will receive her M.A. in coaching and athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine, in May of 2012. She and her husband, Aaron, the assistant athletics director/facilities, reside in Chino with their young daughter, Hunter. |
